Power, and the Space Race. The 1960’s had a big start that really got the
United States going. So many changes and innovations were being made, this was
a pivotal time period in our history. John F. Kennedy gave the inspirational “Man
on the Moon” speech, that kicked off after the Soviet Union launched Sputnik
into outer space. In 1969, Neil Armstrong made history as he landed safely and
being the first man to ever walk on the moon. Civil Rights Act was finally
passed in the United States, and the feminist movement became to make way.
Towards the end of this period, music become crucial to our culture, and the Woodstock
hippie generation was being born.
Fashion, as a whole,
was becoming more androgynous, colorful, and unique. While the 50s were
sensible and clear, the 60’s weren’t. Patterns and prints were similar between
both men and women’s fashion.
THE LADIES
Sheaths and shift
dresses were still popular during this time period. Geometric shapes and
patterns were a common selection. They wore less jewelry, because they focused
most of their attention to the intricate prints on clothing. Miniskirts were
also first introduced during this time period, the shortest length we’ve seen
yet. Go-Go boots were a bold statement piece that usually rock stars wore.
The pillbox hat, made
famous by Jackie Kennedy, the first lady, were beginning to emerge and all
women loved them. Bowler hats were also a favorite, going along with the androgynous
vibe. Oversized sunglasses became very stylish.
Make Up actually
shifted towards a more dramatic eye, darkly lined eyes with layers of mascara
to create thick, long, and dark lashes. Pale porcelain skin and shiny lips was
considered beautiful at the time.
THE HUNKS
Suits became brighter
and the men’s fashion started to get more bold. You could easily see a man
walking down the street in a bright and colorful suit with different patterns;
polyester, paisley, or pinstripe. Wide ties were also considered stylish,
sometimes reaching up to 5 inches in width. Blazers and cardigans seen more and
more throughout the years.
For a more casual
look, men went to slacks and cardigans. You can’t forget the classic button up
and vest too. Every element of their wardrobe was now texturized with these new
trending styles.
Everyone knew exactly
who the Fab Four were, the Beatles. They inspired much of the men’s fashion
during this time. Bowl cut hairstyles were very common along with side burns,
beards, and mustaches. Many other hairstyles existed still.
THE LATE 1960s
Rockers and Hippies.
The hippie movement
became HUGE coming towards the end of the 1960s. Woodstock and flower power
became insane. Tie die, paisley, fringe, bell bottoms, flower headbands,
braids, sandals, and long hair were worn by all. Peace and Free Love everybody!

TWIGGY
An
English model, actress, and singer, whose real name is Lesley Lawson, became
well known after her spread with her infamous “pixie” look. She truly defined
the perfect women for the Big lashes and androgynous style.
Brigitte Bardot
A French model who
became a sex symbol of the 60s. She made it on to the cover of Elle as a teen,
and starred in many films with many famous actors.
Alfred Hitchcock
Also known as “The
Master of Suspense”, Hitchcock was a widely famous film director and producer. His
forte was psychological thrillers. Some of his most famous films were The Ring, The Trouble with Harry, and Psycho.
Muhammed Ali
He was an
professional American boxer who was a reigning champ; he could knock out almost
every component in all of his matches. He got on to the U.S. Olympic Boxing
team and defeated Zbigniew Pietrzkowski from Poland and won himself the Gold
Medal.
