Q&A: What is Fashion Week?

The beauty and fashion industry has lingo, terminology, and events that can sometimes be a bit confusing; no worries, you’re not alone. In this Q&A post, we’ll be discussing the question, What is Fashion Week?

FASHION WEEK:
A fashion industry event, lasting about 1 week, which allows designers, brands or ‘houses’ to display their latest collections in runway shows and buyers to take a look at the upcoming seasonal trends

Fashion week occurs twice a year alongside the seasons fall and spring. There are 4 fashion shows (8 total for the year) that happen in each of the 4 fashion capitals of the world. They are New York, Milan, Paris, and London.

The events consist of your typical set up for any fashion show; dressers, make up artists, stylists, personal assistants, photographers, the press, and many others can be found backstage. This is a big moment for any designer or company; it’s the public’s first glimpse into what buyers will like, and what the people will like.

In 1943, the first ever New York Fashion Week was held at the Plaza Hotel. During this time, French designs were so hard to come by, so American Designers began to flourish, and raised the appeal for American designs. The original name was called “Press Week” but it has enveloped into the famed “Fashion Week” as we know it today.

There are lists of other fashion weeks that other companies do; these are the main focused ones that most everyone look forward too

Q&A | What is Haute Couture?

The word is French and simply means 'high sewing.' Google defines haute couture as, the designing and making of high-quality fashionable clothes by leading fashion houses, especially to order
Haute Couture is the most unique and extravagant form of fashion design. There is no limit on any piece of clothing that is tailored and created by any designer.

When it comes to high fashion, it is also high in price. Designers will use only the best fabrics and spend time hand stitching and tailoring to form fit whomever ordered from them. Some people wonder why it the price is so high; it's mostly because you are receiving something so valuable, so original and so beautiful using only the finest materials. Prices can range from $5,000 to $20,000 spent on a dress or jacket, but it can also be much more than that. Often celebrities will order a couture wedding dress for their big day.
