Q&A: What is Fashion Week?

The beauty and fashion industry has lingo, terminology, and events that can sometimes be a bit confusing; no worries, you’re not alone. In this Q&A post, we’ll be discussing the question, What is Fashion Week?

FASHION WEEK:
A fashion industry event, lasting about 1 week, which allows designers, brands or ‘houses’ to display their latest collections in runway shows and buyers to take a look at the upcoming seasonal trends

Fashion week occurs twice a year alongside the seasons fall and spring. There are 4 fashion shows (8 total for the year) that happen in each of the 4 fashion capitals of the world. They are New York, Milan, Paris, and London.

The events consist of your typical set up for any fashion show; dressers, make up artists, stylists, personal assistants, photographers, the press, and many others can be found backstage. This is a big moment for any designer or company; it’s the public’s first glimpse into what buyers will like, and what the people will like.

In 1943, the first ever New York Fashion Week was held at the Plaza Hotel. During this time, French designs were so hard to come by, so American Designers began to flourish, and raised the appeal for American designs. The original name was called “Press Week” but it has enveloped into the famed “Fashion Week” as we know it today.

There are lists of other fashion weeks that other companies do; these are the main focused ones that most everyone look forward too

Q&A | What is Haute Couture?

The word is French and simply means 'high sewing.' Google defines haute couture as, the designing and making of high-quality fashionable clothes by leading fashion houses, especially to order
Haute Couture is the most unique and extravagant form of fashion design. There is no limit on any piece of clothing that is tailored and created by any designer.

When it comes to high fashion, it is also high in price. Designers will use only the best fabrics and spend time hand stitching and tailoring to form fit whomever ordered from them. Some people wonder why it the price is so high; it's mostly because you are receiving something so valuable, so original and so beautiful using only the finest materials. Prices can range from $5,000 to $20,000 spent on a dress or jacket, but it can also be much more than that. Often celebrities will order a couture wedding dress for their big day.

1990s | The Nineties, So Fresh

A lot of the influence and culture of the 1980s bled into the next couple years. The 90s were the year that grunge and goth really began to take off. Hip Hop music became mainstream and could be heard on every radio in the country. There is a lot of influence from the 90s style that is apparent in our current generation! It was also the start of combining different looks from different decades. Come explore the fly threads and fresh styles of the 1990s...

THE CHICA'S

Women's clothing was generally loose fitting. All sorts of jeans were worn during this time period, especially Mom Jeans. Belly shirts and mini skirts could be easily seen on the streets. Because inspiration was coming from absolutley anywhere there wasn't any set hemline or style anymore. Originality and being unique began to be the popular thing to do.

A lot of pieces could be worn by both boys and girls, like baseball caps and overalls. Lots of people liked putting only 1 strap on their shoulders when they wore overalls. Skorts were all over the place. And simple spagehtti strap dresses were very popular. Grahpic Tees and Sweaters were a go-to. There was a lot of influence from T.V. shows like Saved by the Bell, Sex in the City, and Friends. Every woman in America wanted to look like Jennifer Aniston with her "Rachel" haircut.

THE BOYS

These guys were all about their Air Jordans. This is when it began to start being really important what kind of footwear you wore on your feet. Baseball caps and bucket hats were the cherry on top!

You could find a lot of boys in extra long tee shirts and long shorts. Since hip hope began having more of an influence, you could see a lot of what they wore finding their way into other's closests. Mullets and frosted tips were one of the two most popular hairstyles. For a more formal look, a lot of men wore turtleneck sweaters

1980s | The Totally Rad Eighties

The love of music and fashion seeped over from the 70s to the 80s. America was establishing a new wave of living. The Personal Computer was introduced and so was the World Wide Web. That began the changes of how we all communicated with each other. Pac Man and Rubik's cube were favorite things for people to pass the time with. Music was at an all time high with influences like Michael Jackson, Madonna and Cyndi Lauper! There awesome times were paired with awesome new styles...

THE BABES

1980s were so much more than just finger-less gloves and everything neon, there were plenty of other fads that people wore all the time that were a little less abrasive...

Denim was a very popular choice. Denim jackets and jeans were often a favorite combination for both Men and Women! The great part about this time in history is that things started becoming a lot more androgynous. You'd also find anyone wearing overalls, chuck taylors, and patterned sweaters. Shoulder pads were very common in Women's blazers. That "boxed out" look was very pleasing and attractive. Prints with horses, kittens, hearts and rainbows were very popular to wear with sweaters!

The biggest thing that the 80's is known for? The color. This was a very colorful time period. Girl's weren't afraid of bright makeup and blue mascara! Jewelry was chunky with solid colors; triangular and round usually. High waist-ed jeans were common, along with the acid-wash style! Finishing off your look with a pair of jellies was the best way to go!

THE HOMEBOYS

The men were more about the finer details during the 80's. Cuffing and rolling jeans was very popular. Gold chains were common during the beginning of this time period, but the fad didn't last very long. Turtlenecks were also a great choice. This is also the time when "popping your collar" was considered very cool. Chuck Taylors were a staple piece for anyone stylin'!

Men were, and always have been, about pairing the basics together but giving a personal twist on it. College T-Shirts were both comfortable and made for a great statement piece. Alongside the collar trend, boys would layer collared shirts to give that duo tone in their style! The fabric they were was much softer and snug in the 80s.
